International Waters Strategy
GEF intended to have a global institutional impact under the $660million IW scenario by testing management approaches in a jointprogrammatic approach with the Biodiversity focal area.
With lessfunding, only a limited set of pilots can be supported with lessglobal catalytic impact than in higher scenarios.
Outcomes include:sustainable fisheries mechanisms and institutions, promotion andcapacity building on the use of improved gears, improved flag-stateand port-state monitoring and control of fishing practices; andprotection of vulnerable marine ecosystems--including seamounts.Partnerships with NGOs/foundations/ States/ agencies/ industriesare expected.
Indicators include: establishment of BPAs, improvedflag and port state enforcement; demonstration plans underimplementation for incorporation of these concerns into work ofRFMOs and other institutions, and establishment of new, pilotinstitutions and management systems for certain ABNJ, deep-seafisheries, and open oceans.
