Demonstration of clean technologies in tanning processes
-Through the use of large quantities of chemicals and water,
the Egyptian tanning industry has a significant environmental impact,
particularly on solid wastes and wastewater.
-The majority of tanneries, responsible for 85% of the leather produced in
Egypt, are located in the densely populated section of Misr Al Kadima in
southern Cairo. Poor environmental standards encourage the overuse of
chemicals, which in turn increases the quantity of waste produced

| Objectives | This project aims to demonstrate the use of clean technologies
in tanneries. The project will raise awareness on the needs for, and
benefits of, environmental processes in tanning-production methods. The foreseen activities include: · The assessment of the needs for an environmental unit for the Egyptian leather industry; · The establishment of an environmental laboratory; · The design and set-up of a tanning pilot plant and of a wastewater treatment pilot plant; · Testing the pilot wastewater treatment pilot plant with a tanning company; and · The dissemination of project results. |
