CITpax Conference on Water: "Water in the Middle East: Conflict or Cooperation?"

This seminar will examine how water has been a source of conflict, and how it can
become a current for peace in the Middle East. Water scarcity has always been a serious
question of national and regional security, more so in the last years with the growth of
population and affects of "global warming" – this calls for the issue to be treated and
converted into a broader issue of cooperation across the region. The seminar will
advance the notion that within its Neighbourhood Policy around the Mediterranean, the
EU can play a positive role in contributing to reduce the scarcity through a variety of
means including desalination of sea water, efficient water use, water sanitation and
encouraging collaboration between regional actors in the Middle East. By doing so
through collaboration with the region's peoples, the EU will enhance security and
stability in the region. The seminar will examine a success case and a more difficult
scenario in order to establish which venues would be most amenable to regional
cooperation. Through this approach, this meeting intends to begin a practical process of
renewing cooperative regional measures on the water issues, including the identification
of the next steps to be taken for development in the Middle East.

4th EWA Brussels Conference on the Economic Aspects of the Water Framework Directive

The 4th EWA Brussels Conference on European Water Management is coming closer. After the great success of the 3rd annual event, with more than 110 participants, the European Water Association will continue the discussion among the experts from the water sector of sustainable water management. The 4th Annual Conference, which will take place on the 4th of November 2008, will bring together European and international experts to discuss the economic aspects of the Water Framework Directive.

The conference will include up to 8 extremely interesting lectures and a various number of experts, including such from the European Commission. The one-day-conference will be a major event for all stakeholders involved in the water sector and economic decision making.

Free Integrated Urban Water Management training: "Integrated Urban Water Management – What’s in it for the City of the Future?"

This is an invitation to a free training session entitled "Integrated Urban Water Management - What's in it for the City of the Future?" that is being held by ICLEl during the Stockholm World Water Week from 15:00 to 18:00 on 19 August 2008.

The training will be of particular interest for senior decision-makers and planners in local governments.

Arranged as part of the European Commission funded project "SWITCH - Managing Water for the City of the Future" (www.switchurbanwater.eu/), the executive training will raise awareness on the opportunities, benefits and costs of an integrated approach to urban water management. In particular, the session will examine whether such an approach could result in more efficient and sustainable uses of water resources in an urban environment.

The training is free of charge and will take place in room 265 of the Stockholm International Fairs and Congress Centre (venue for the World Water Week). Attendance at the World Water Week is not necessary to take part in the training.
