The 6th Meeting of the Circle of Mediterranean Parliamentarians for Sustainable Development

As decided at COMPSUD 5 in Cairo (November 2006), COMPSUD is building links with other parliamentary groups and regional parliamentary initiatives aiming to promote the sustainable development and IWRM agendas in these processes. The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs is the main supporter of the event.

COMPSUD 6 will discuss and analyze possible ways to strengthen the dimensions of Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection, as well as of Integrated Water resources Management (IWRM) in central regional political processes such as the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (EMP), the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP) and the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD) that was developed in the framework of the Barcelona Convention. The meeting will focus in particularly on the role of Parliamentarians in promoting these processes and policies and on the type of initiatives that need to be undertaken towards this direction, in cooperation with other governmental and non-governmental stakeholders.

Moreover, COMPSUD 6 is organized in view of the next Meeting of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (EMPA) in Greece with the aim to enhance interlinks and cooperation between these two Parliamentary Bodies and the effectiveness of their interventions on Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development in the Mediterranean Region.

Participants will also be informed about the activities and objectives of other Parliamentary Bodies or their relevant Committees (European Parliament, Committee on the Environment, Agriculture and Local and Regional Affairs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union etc.) with whom COMPSUD is developing cooperation.
