Event The World Justice Forum III

The World Justice Forum III will be held from June 20 - 23, 2011 in Barcelona, Spain. Over 450 diverse leaders--from heads of state and Supreme Court justices, to medical doctors, school teachers, engineers, business owners and artists, among others--will come together to develop projects to advance the rule of law across disciplines, and around the world. This action-oriented Forum builds on the success of the first and second World Justice Forums, as well as nine regional outreach meetings held across the globe.

Confirmed speakers include: William H. Gates Sr., Co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Amr Musa, Secretary-General of the Arab League; Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland; Michael J. Holston, Executive Vice President and General Counsel for Hewlett-Packard; Adama Dieng, Registrar for the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda; and Somaly Mam, Founder of The Somaly Mam Foundation, among others.

Project Design Process Session

Selected WJP multidisciplinary project implementers present their programs, including how such projects have worked to strengthen the rule of law, to inform the design of future programs and to identify replicable approaches.

This session will be designed as a discussion with emphasis on questions and answers. This will provide the participants with the opportunity to quiz previous successful project leaders and WJP staff concerning lessons learned and best practices.

Track Three: THE RULE OF LAW, THE ENVIRONMENT, AND PUBLIC HEALTH

Transcending various sectors, the rule of law plays a pivotal role, both nationally and internationally, in promoting a green economy, environmental protection, and public health.

The principal rule of law issues discussed by panelists will include:

  • What is the role of the rule of law in preserving natural resources to safeguard the quality of lives and sustainability of economic growth?
  • What are the challenges in enforcing energy efficiency and renewable resources legislation?
  • What effect does the rule of law and environmental protection have on public health?
