Event ESA - EMWIS Workshop: "Exploitation of Earth Observation for water management in the Mediterranean"

After the previous workshop that took place in Frascati (Italy) on 27-28 September 2010 (see: http://www.emwis.net/documents/meetings/fol791509/ESA-EMWIS_ROMA2010 ), and in light of the progress made by the NASA project aiming at improving local and regional management of water and agriculture by means of remote sensing technology, and more specifically, to support the use of ICT systems & Earth observation tools for improved water & environmental management on a regional scale; and to use satellite tools for improving water resource management, with focus on use of technologies to alleviate water scarcity, especially desalination, and waste water reuse, and irrigation modernization; EMWIS Technical Unit decided together with the European Space Agency (ESA) to organize this regional training targeting water managers and remote sensing centres representatives from Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan.

The aim of the training is to seek the possible opportunities of completeness of these actions undertaken by theaforemtntioned NASA/World Bank project, and help the participants implement what is lacking in that project and of interest for their countries, especially the topics of priority defined earlier in the previous workshop of 2010  (by Morocco, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt representatives) in Frascati’10 (http://www.emwis.net/documents/meetings/fol791509/ESA-EMWIS_ROMA2010/conceptnote_eo4medwatermgt.doc ): water abstraction/evapotranspiration, agricultural land use/irrigation, flood monitoring, water quality (lowest priority).

The event will be also the occasion to discuss next call for proposals opportunities, new actions and projects with clear added value for the participating countries and that fill the blank of what is lacking in terms of remote sensing technology uses for the water sector. In addition, this can complete EMWIS efforts towards strengthening National Information Systems and harmonization of data collection towards a Shared Mediterranean Water Information System.
