Event WES regional online training on Water Accounting

An on-line regional training workshop will be organized with sessions to be held between 12 and 26 October 2020. The purpose of this regional training is to introduce water accounting as a tool to achieve integrated water governance for all users and a sustainable water balance between availability and use. It will also capture the important role of accounting in planning, in water monitoring and in measuring water related to the SDG 6 target by providing a framework for the development of indicators.

Participants to this regional training will have the opportunity to:

  • Get a comprehensive introduction to the overall concept of water accounts (environmental and economic components) and its different approaches (e.g. FAO, EU);
  • Learn about the benefits of water accounting and the use of water accounting outputs (e.g. assessment, planning, policy decision, UN SDG process);
  • Get familiar with the Physical Flow accounts and Physical Assets accounts, using the UN System of Environmental Economic Accounting for Water;
  • Get introduced to the economic accounts using the UN System of Environmental Economic Accounting for Water;
  • Review data needs and requirements for water accounting on the basis of UN International recommendation for Water Statistics (IWRS) and the role of the different institutions in water accounting and data collection;
  • Explore the practical use of water accounting through countries’ case studies (preferably from the MENA region);
  • Implement rapid water accounting practical exercises;
  • Share experience on real situations in their own countries where water accounting can be

The training will be led by international experts Eric Mino, George Bariamis and Guillame le Gall, using a tailored on-line platform.

 The sessions will be short and will include focus group discussions, break-out sessions and exercises. Background material for the participants will be provided in advance. Total training duration will be about 30 hours including homework, representing around 12 hours online. A detailed day-by-day agenda will be provided to registered participants early September.
