News Morocco doubles efforts to meet needs in water

Morocco is doubling efforts to meet current and long term needs in water, said a Moroccan official.

A national plan will define the strategic axes in water management, climate and environment protection as part of a reform strategy, Minister in charge of Territory Development, Water and Environment, Mohamed El Yazghi, said on Friday.

Reform, he pointed out, will also focus on fighting the pollution of phreatic resources, developing domestic and industrial wastewater treatment and the decentralized management of these resources.

Earlier this month, El Yazghi warned at the opening of the political session of the UN Climate Conference that Morocco is located in "a region that will witness, in the upcoming years, the worst situations in terms of hydric resources."

He said "North Africa and the Mediterranean are among the regions that will receive the least rainfalls in the upcoming years."
