UNESCO: Need for more water professionals
UNESCO-IHE has been a major player in water sector capacity building during its five decades of existence, be it by educating and training individuals, strengthening institutions in developing countries, or raising awareness for the need of capable professionals. But the increasing challenges in the water sector (water scarcity, pollution, floods, climate change, etc), demand increasing number of skilled professionals.
Estimates indicate that if the MDGs on water are to be met, a 300% increase in the number of trained water managers is needed in Africa, Asia will need to double the number of trained professionals, and Latin America will require at least a 50% increase. This daunting challenge is one that UNESCO-IHE is willing to take up.
