News eContentplus programme call for proposals for the year 2008 launched

The Commission adopted the eContentplus 2008 Work Programme and call for proposals on 19 March 2008. The call announcement was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 20 March 2008 (C 74 of  20.3.2008, p. 62). The call with an overall budget of 42.5 million EUR is now officially open and will close on 12 June 2008, 17:00 hrs Luxembourg local time.

The call covers various actions in three target areas:

  • In the area of Geographic Information, eContentplus will stimulate the aggregation of existing national datasets into cross border datasets, which will serve to underpin new information services and products, in particular with a view to reducing barriers related to one or more of the specific themes mentioned in annexes I-III of the INSPIRE Directive (
  • In the area of Educational Content, the programme will support the emergence of adequate information infrastructure, and encourage the use of open standards to stimulate the deployment of effective pan-European learning services.
  • In the area of Digital Libraries, eContentplus will support the creation of the European Digital Library as well as the maximisation of the impact of European research results.

The European Digital Library ( is a common multilingual access point to Europe's distributed digital cultural heritage, hospitable to all types of cultural material (texts, audiovisual, museum objects, archival records, etc.), targeted at delivering rapidly a critical mass of resources to users.
