News Organised Euro-Med civil society call for greater involvement in “Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean”

Organised Euro-Mediterranean civil society has called for its greater involvement in the "Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean" and its recommendation will be forwarded to the Foreign Ministers meeting taking place in November. The decision, along with other recommendations, came at the “Euromed Summit of Economic and social councils and similar institutions” meeting in Rabat, co‑hosted by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and Moroccan civil society organisations, with the support of Morocco's Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the European Commission.

The social dimension of relations between the EU and the partner countries was discussed and it was recommended that all the initiatives, programmes and projects carried out under Mediterranean policies, in particular the “Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean” should reflect the social dimension, a key element for the sustainable development of the partner countries. Other key issues for civil society in the region addressed at the summit included the prospects for the creation of a Free Trade Area in 2010, the access of women to economic and social life, intercultural dialogue, freedom of association and consolidating participatory bodies in the region.

The Euromed Summit of Economic and Similar Institutions is funded by the EU’s Regional Programme with €50,000 per annum (MEDA). It is an annual forum on-going since 1995 that discusses social and economic issues of interest to the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership.
