Water heritage project hosts Festival of Citrus Fruits in Hammamet

The Euromed Heritage water project REMEE is organising a festival in the Hammamet region in Tunisia from 19-21 March, aimed at rediscovering traditional techniques employed in citrus culture.

 During the three-day festival – including a series of round-tables,musical performances and exhibitions – the local community will have the opportunity to discover Hammamet landscape and cultures, savour different types of citrus fruits, and become familiar with traditional techniques and methods for water management used by local farmers.  The goal of the event is to increase public awareness of the importance of vernacular water heritage and its conservation.  Particularly addressed to young people, the event also aims to contribute to efforts to widen the range of Hammamet tourism assets through the promotion of its landscape and identity. In the course of the project, REMEE will create an eco-museum of the Orangerie, which will enhance the architectural heritage and the know-how related to arboriculture in the region, as well as an educational garden and a model orchard to be implemented in the park of Hammamet Cultural Centre. All these elements will be part of a future touristic trail, ecological and sustainable.  REMEE (Rediscovering Together the Water Heritage in the Mediterranean) is a project under the EuroMed Heritage IV programme, which began in January 2009 and runs until the end of June 2011. It has a budget of just over €1 million. EuroMed Heritage IV is a €17 million EU-funded programme which contributes to the exchange of experiences on cultural heritage, creates networks and promotes cooperation with the Mediterranean PartnerCountries. It focuses on the appropriation by the local populations of their cultural heritage and favours access to education and knowledge ofcultural heritage. It supports a framework for the exchange of experiences, channels for the dissemination of best practices and new perspectives aimed at the development of an institutional cultural environment. (ENPI Info Centre)
