Algeria and Morocco concluded last 18 March 2011 in Rabat a memorandum of cooperation (MOC) in water resources, to promote bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The agreement, signed by Abdelmalek Sellal, the minister of Water Resources and Amina Benkhadra, the Moroccan minister of Energy, Mines, Water and Environment provides for boosting cooperation between Algeria and Morocco mainly in irrigation, hydraulics, dam management, water transfer and seawater desalination.

Under the MOC, and as a first step in the relaunch of such cooperation, a meeting is to be held by the bilateral committee of the respective general managers of the two ministries, on April 18 in Algiers. The two sides will tackle issues relating to water management and purification and seawater desalination.
