Degremont-Marubeni JV wins Doha wastewater reuse extension
Qatar's Public Works Authority has awarded a € 65 million contract for expanding the Doha West membrane-based wastewater treatment and recycling plant to a joint venture of France's Degrémont and Japan's Marubeni Corporation.
The project will increase the plant's size from 135,000 to 175,000 m³/d, to serve an estimated population of 650,000. The installation is already the country's largest operating wastewater treatment plant.
This expansion comes under the contract signed in 2005 to design, build and operate the plant for 10 years and is expected to take 22 months.
Sited 20 km west of Doha, the existing plant has been operating since March 2010. Equipped with a state-of-the-art ultrafiltration system, the facility allows 85% of treated wastewater to be reused for irrigation of green areas and market gardens, and for recharging aquifers.
