News International Hydropower Association World Congress 2011 - Final Summary

The International Hydropower Association (IHA) heldits biennial World Congress on Advancing Sustainable Hydropower in Iguaçu, Brazil. Five hundred participantsattended the meeting from 71 countries. Representatives fromthe hydropower industry who are members of IHA, includingutilities and operators, as well as representatives of social and environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs),indigenous communities, multilateral finance institutions and research centers participated in the meeting.Following previous Congresses held in Reykjavik, Icelandin 2009 and Antalya, Turkey in 2007, this event included thelaunch of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol,the result of a joint effort by the industry and environmentaland social NGOs to define criteria for the sustainable development and management of hydropower projects.The meeting presented a broad view of the sustainability challenges to hydropower development, reflected on the latestIntergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessment on renewable energy, which notes sustainability does nothave a direct relationship with dam size, and discussed the opportunities arising from the growing interest in green growth strategies within the international community, as well as fromthe growth of carbon market finance opportunities.
