News Handbook on Shared Environment Information System available soon

A guidance document on Shared Environment Information Systems (SEIS), the 'SEIS cookbook’, bringing together good practices and examples of developing and implementing Shared Environmental Information Systems on the country level is currently under preparation, based on the experience and working progress on SEIS in the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the European Environment Information and Observation Network (Eionet) member and cooperating countries.

A press release said the ’SEIS cookbook’ would be organised around different sections, including a general overview of SEIS structured around the three main components (Content, Infrastructure and Institutional cooperation), as well as a collection of good practice examples illustrating SEIS principles on the basis of the three components emerging from EEA cooperation with EEA member countries, cooperating countries in the West Balkans, ENPI East and South and various International organisations.

The EU-funded project ENPI-Shared Environment Information System (ENPI-SEIS) aims to promote the protection of the environment in the countries of the ENPI area. The main outcomes of the ENPI-SEIS project will address the three SEIS components — cooperation, content and infrastructure — through enhanced networking with the national capacities on environmental information. Furthermore, it will promote open, public access to information through compatible and freely available exchange tools.

The EU also funds a Euro-Mediterranean initiative, Horizon 2020, which aims to improve the quality of life of more than 420 million citizens living in the 25 countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. It is an umbrella programme drawing together all the policies, strategies and action plans for enhancing environmental protection.
