News UNESCO Holds Climate Change Reporting Workshop in Iran

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Tehran Office and the Iranian Association for Studies on the Information Society (IRASIS), with support from the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC), held a workshop on climate change reporting. The workshop aimed to build the capacity of the media to better inform citizens.

The workshop, held on 5-6 November 2012, in Tehran, Iran, brought together 18 participants, and kicked off of a series of workshops. According to UNESCO, the workshops aim to strengthen the professional capacity of journalists to produce greater quality and volume of reporting on climate change, to raise levels of public awareness and debate, and to create more opportunities for journalists to build networks.

Participants at the Tehran workshop heard presentations on: the need to address challenges brought about by climate change; the early history of climate change; practical steps that should be taken by the media, including producing educative reporting on how to deal with waste management; and the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in reducing the impact of climate change.

The second training workshop is taking place in Mashad on 12-13 November 2012, and the final workshop will be held in Shiraz on 19-20 November. [UNESCO Press Release]
