Outcomes of the UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference: "Economic assessment of desertification, sustainable land management and resilience of arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas"

Today land degradation is costing the international community some USD490 billion every year, way higher than the cost of action to prevent it. This is the conclusion of the UNCCD 2^nd Scientific Conference, which was declared closed by Antonio ROCHA MAGALHÃES; Chairperson of the Committee of Science and Technology at the World Conference Centre in Bonn on Friday, 12 April 2013.

GRF Davos had been mandated by the UNCCD Secretariat as lead organizer for the conference. For about 2 years the GRF Davos team was working on making this conference a success.

The Preliminary Conference Report describes in a total of 40 sections the most prominent and important outcomes and recommendations of the UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference, held from 9 – 12 April 2013 in Bonn, Germany. The specific thematic focus of the Conference was put on the "Economic assessment of desertification, sustainable land management and resilience of arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas", requiring the evaluation and analysis of current state-of-the-art knowledge on this topic and translating available scientific findings into recommendations for the use by policy and decision makers.

The Conference Summary Report is based on session reports which condensed the plenary sessions, parallel sessions, and the special sessions of the UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference that was held 9-12 April 2013 in Bonn, Germany.
