CBCMed project "NANOWAT" to hold training course on water purification technologies

An EU-funded Mediterranean cross-border cooperation project is organising a training course on water purification technologies aiming to develop the use of new techniques. 

The course on "Conventional and New Water Purification Technologies" is organised by the project ‘Diffusion of nanotechnology based devices for water treatment and recycling’ (NANOWAT), funded under the Cross-Border Cooperation in the Mediterranean programme (CBCMed). The training session will be held on 27, 28 and 29 August in Jerusalem in order to take stock of the conventional procedures and to enhance the use of new technologies based on filtration and photocatalytic processes in wastewater treatment. The course is opened to researchers, students, technicians, and any other people interested in water treatment technologies. It will include a guided tour of a waste water treatment plant located close to Jerusalem.

 A similar training course under the title "New approaches in advanced oxidation processes for water treatment" took place in Montpellier (France) in March 2013 while additional training courses and workshops will be held throughout 2014 and 2015 in Israel and Italy.

 The NANOWAT project aims to develop new technologies and operate pilot equipment for the efficient purification of water. The project is currently implementing a series of pilot activities in the participating countries designed to setup miniaturized equipment to purify water applying at the same time new methods of filtration (perchlorate, herbicides, hydrophobic pollutants, pharmaceuticals, micro-organisms). The project has a total budget of €1,404,524 of which a CBCMed contribution of €1,186,183 (84.5%). 

 The project is coordinated by the University of Basilicata - Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Environment (Italy, Basilicata) - and the partnership is composed of two research centres and of one university:

 • National Centre for Scientific Researches, Hydrosciences Montpellier (France, Languedoc-Roussillon) 
• Spanish National Research Council, Institute for Natural Resources and Agrobiology (Spain, Andalucía) 
• The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel)

 The ENPI CBC Mediterranean Sea Basin Programme 2007/2013 is a multilateral cross-border cooperation programme funded by the European Union under the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument. It aims at reinforcing cooperation between the EU and partner countries' regions located along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
