Djerba (Tunisia) has become a pioneer in selective waste collection
The municipality of Djerba, partner in the CIUDAD project GODEM and member of ACR+MED, has considerably improved its municipal waste management, taking into account "Integrated Sustainable Waste & Resource Management (ISWRM)" principles.
The latest development is the selective collection of packaging waste and biowaste. Packaging waste is collected once per week in a green transparent plastic bag, bio-waste in small black containers 3 times per week, and the residual waste in a blue bag once per week.
In this way, Djerba becomes a pioneer in the door-to-door selective collection of different waste fractions in the Southern Mediterranean area. The treatment facilities consist of a compost plant and a sorting centre for the packaging waste. A civic amenity center is in the planning process.
