UNOPS in Switzerland is based in Geneva and has excellent links with the international community. Local and international partners call upon the UNOPS Switzerland office for expertise in fund management, project management, procurement of goods and services, and human resources administration to ensure successful delivery of their projects. Focus areas include health, water, and sanitation.

The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) is a global multi-stakeholder partnership organization that works to improve the lives of poor people. The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is the legal and administrative host of WSSCC. Founded in 1990, WSSCC’s mission is to ensure sustainable sanitation, better hygiene and safe drinking water for all people, especially the poorest and most marginalized members of society in developing countries. In order to achieve its mission, WSSCC manages the Global Sanitation Fund, facilitates sector coordination at national, regional and global levels, supports professional development, and advocates on behalf of the 2.5 billion people without a clean, safe toilet to use. The incumbent will be based institutionally in the Directorate, reporting to the Executive Director and will be responsible for strengthening relations between WSSCC and the private sector. This will include the engagement of WSSCC in global forums of the private sector such as the UN Compact, the World Economic Forum and related private sector networks. The incumbent is also expected to support efforts by the Executive Director to develop public private partnerships with tourism, health, sanitation, and other related industries.  In addition, the incumbent will be responsible for securing grant support from corporate foundations and private philanthropies. S/he will also be expected to assist the Executive Director initiate special projects including but not limited to the private sector.

Functional Responsibilities

Global Private Sector Forums and Partnerships

·        Participate in meetings of the UN Compact and World Business Council with focus on their involvement in post-2015 development planning process;

·        Reach out to global private sector networks participating in annual meetings of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and World Health Assembly, as well as World Water Week;

·        Develop strategy for WSSCC participation in WEF 2015 that includes opportunities for WSSCC to support relevant working groups of the World Economic Forum;

·        Develop strategy for private sector participation in (and support to) WSSCC Global Forum on Sanitation and Hygiene;

·        Research and analyze other global private sector forums and partnerships to determine future engagement in private sector.


Public Private Partnerships

·        Research tourism industry to identify private restaurant and hotel chains with large presense in Africa and/or Asia;

·        Anaylze distribution chains and markets of pharmaceutical industry in Africa and Asia;

·        Assess current research and development work in emerging markets of American Standard and other global companies that produce sanitation products;

·        Reach out to a subset of corporations  in tourism, pharmaceutical and sanitation industries to explore the development of public private partnerships;

·        Work with selected corporations to design partnerships that support activities of WSSCC partners and advance core business lines of these corporations.


Resource Mobilization Involving Corporate Philanthropies and Private Foundations

·        Update current list of corporate philanthropies and private foundations and identify a subset that WSSCC can approach in 2014 as a part of its wider resource mobilization strategy;

·        Work with Secretariat and National Coordinators to develop a list of special projects that WSSCC could share with interested donors for potential funding;

·        Assist Executive Director to follow up on the ongoing consultations with private foundations and corportate philanthropies, including Ford, Gates, Rockefeller and Hilton;

·        Prepare a generic funding proposal for core support to WSSCC, that builds upon proposals that have been submitted recently to bilateral development agencies.


Special Projects

·        Design new initiatives and special projects that emerge from private sector engagement;

·        Assist Executive Director to develop new initiatives incubated in the Directorate, on urban sanitation, water for sanitation and hygiene, and institution-based approaches to WASH;

·        Support ongoing special projects of the Deputy Secretary General Call to Action on Sanitation, and strategic initiatives on the post-2015 development agenda.



·        By October 15, ensure progress on follow up actions with ongoing engagements with private foundations; develop detailed work plan for consultancy in consultation with the Executive Director.

·        By November 1, prepare generic funding proposal to corporate foundaitons for core support to WSSCC based on recent proposals.

·        By November 15, ….prepare a strategy for engagement in global private sector forums including twelve month time line of events and anticipated follow up actions

·        By December 1, prepare priority list of corporate philanthropies and private corporations including plan of action for approaching subset of donors in 2014; and prepare list of special projects based upon consultations with WSSCC Secretariate and National Coordinators.


·        By December 15, …. Prepare report on tourism, pharmaceutical and sanitation industry including recommendation for WSSCC engagement with select corporations

·        By January 30, design two public private partnerships that support WSSCC knowledge management, global advocacy, and/or field work and are in line with core business practices of selected corporations.

·        By February 15, negotiate funding proposals wih at least one private foundation and one corporate philanthropy

·        By February 30, prepare strategy for private sector participation in WSSCC Global Forum 2015

·        By March 15, launch at least one public-private partnership, ensure pathway for WSSCC participation in WEF 2015.

  • Throughout the six-month consultancy, ensure regular support to the Executive Director on special projects, new initiatives, and participation in DSG Call to Action on Sanitation and Post-2015 development planning process.

Masters degree in Management, Business Administration, International Relations, Human Rights, or related fields.Experience

Required experience:

  • Ten (10) years of relevant experience
  • Extensive experience working in both private and public sectors
  • Demonstrated knowledge of international development institutions, human rights, corporate governance, fund raising, and social development.
