News Dr. Abdullah Al-Alshaikh named president of IDA

Dr. Abdullah Al-Alshaikh, deputy governor for planning and development of Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) in Saudi Arabia, has been named president of the International Desalination Association (IDA) for the 2013-2015 term, according to a press release.

Emilio Gabbrielli, vice president of business development of Toray Membrane, has been named first vice president and Miguel Angel Sanz, director of development and innovation of Degrémont, has been named second vice president, the release reported.

Al-Alshaikh has more than 25 years of experience in the municipal water industry, noted the release.

He has been a member of the IDA board of directors since 2009, the release reported, and has served as chairman of the IDA R&D Committee since that time.

Deputy Governor for Planning and Development, Saline Water Conversion Corporation

Dr. Abdullah Al-Alshaikh is Deputy Governor for Planning and Development at Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC).

Dr. Al-Alshaikh’s first postgraduate position was as Engineer with the Ar Riyadh Development Authority. In 1992, he was appointed Director of the Diplomatic Quarter in Riyadh where he was responsible for the construction, operations and maintenance of facilities. In 1994, he began working with SWCC as Project Engineer in the Studies and Design Department where he reviewed proposals and designs for pipelines, pumping stations, and storage tanks for supplying water to Jeddah, Makkah, and Taif. He was promoted to General Manager of Projects in the head office in 1996 and worked in the department dealing with bid evaluations, awarding and implementing contracts and interacting with contractors and government agencies for major multimillion dollar power and desalination projects. In 2002, he was promoted to Assistant Deputy Governor for Projects and Technical Affairs before a promotion in 2006 to his current position of Deputy Governor for Planning and Development. Dr. Al-Alshaikh was elected a member of the IDA Board of Directors and Chairman of its Research and Development Committee, as well as elected Vice Chairman of the Saudi Council of Engineers and Chairman of its Project Management Chapter.

Dr. Al-Alshaikh received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from King Saud University, a Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering from Pennsylvania State University, and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Hull University in the U.K.
