News APFM Highlights Publications on Flood Management, Forecasting and Mapping

The Associated Programme on Flood Management (APFM), a partnership between the Global Water Partnership (GWP) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO), has introduced three publications in the Integrated Flood Management (IFM) Tool Series in their January 2014 Newsletter. The publications address flood forecasting and early warning, transboundary flood management, and flood mapping.

The report titled 'Flood Forecasting and Early Warning' provides practitioners with information on: aspects of flood forecasting and early warning systems; flood forecasting models and monitoring networks; organization of flood forecasting and early warnings, outreach to users; and national examples of flood forecasting and early warning systems from Australia, Bangladesh, Mozambique, Great Britain and the US.

The report titled 'Transboundary Flood Management' contains sections on: procedures for transboundary flood management; adaptation of river-basin flood management to climate change; and lessons learned, recommendations and statements. This report highlights elements necessary to foster transboundary cooperation on the issue of floods.

The report titled 'Flood Mapping' includes material on: frameworks for flood mapping; flood mapping processes and products; map production technical considerations; and dissemination of flood information.

The APFM Tool Series is targeted towards flood management practitioners, aiming to provide them with relevant technical guidance. Other reports in the series address issues including: coasts and deltas; flash floods; urban area; climate change-related flood risk; sediment; risk sharing; flood plain restoration; land-use planning; reservoir operation; community participation; and environmental assessment.
