UN Secretary-General Appoints DRR and Water Special Envoy

Han Seung-soo, Republic of Korea, has been appointed to the position of UN Secretary-General Special Envoy for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Water, with the aim to engage private sector and civil society support for water-related DRR work being undertaken by the UN.

The appointment comes during the development of the post-2015 sustainable development goals (SDGs), designed to follow the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and the post-2015 Hyogo Framework for Action, a follow-on to the 10-year Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA) adopted in 2005.

Special Envoy Han will bring his experience as former Chairperson of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) Governing Board, member of the Secretary-General's High-Level Panel (HLP) on Global Sustainability in the lead-up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), former Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, President of the 56th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), and Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Climate Change.
