Waste management and treatment: project launches survey to assess knowledge of young people and local actors
The Green Med Initiative (GMI), funded under the Cross Border Cooperation programme in the Mediterranean Basin (CBCMed), is launching an online survey to assess the level of knowledge of young people with regard to sustainable development and identifying territorial dynamics which impact waste management.
In the framework of its preparatory activities which will lead to the installation of reverse vending machines in 200 schools and universities, the GMI project is launching a study aimed at establishing a comprehensive picture of waste management practices and policies in six countries of the Mediterranean area – Egypt, France, Italy, Lebanon, Spain and Tunisia.
The survey is aimed at students, school children and actors of local value chains (companies, public organisations, civil society…). Two online questionnaires are available in Arabic, French, Italian and Spanish.
The Green Med Initiative, which has a total budget of €4.1 million, aims at promoting sustainable development related to waste treatment and recycling, encouraging environmental education among young people and ensuring a change in their behaviour towards the environment. The project will develop an incentive-based scheme to promote environmentally sustainable practices in schools and universities. More specifically, a considerable quantity of used plastic bottles and cans (estimated amount of 20 tons) will be collected through Reverse Vending Machines placed in 200 schools and universities across six countries of the Mediterranean area. At the same time, in order to encourage youth to strengthen their environmental responsibility and knowledge, environmental awareness activities will be implemented.
The ENPI CBC Mediterranean Sea Basin Programme 2007/2013 is a multilateral cross-border cooperation programme funded by the European Union under the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument. It aims at reinforcing cooperation between the EU and partner countries' regions located along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
