Desertification in the Mediterranean: Environmental Risks of a Mediterranean Free Trade Agreement

This  note  discusses  the  problem  of desertification  and  its  effect  onthe  agricultural  practices  of the  Mediterranean  Basin  and  examines  theenvironmental  deterioration  which will likely  follow the establishment  ofthe  Mediterranean  Free  Trade  Zone  in  2010.  This  note  then focuses  onthe reality  of an  environmental  side  agreement  as  a means  to incorporateenvironmental  provisions  into  the  final  Mediterranean  Free  TradeAssociation  and  presents  supplemental  solutions  to  minimizeenvironmental  damage  and  desertification  while  pursuing  economicgrowth in  a free market.
