Wood is Mali’s primary energy source. Overcutting for fuel is a serious problem that has resulted in the decline of forested area.  The major environmental problem in Mali is increasing desertification. Mali—with one national park, four animal reserves, and six forest reserves —shows some improvement in the percentage of protected area to total surface area (Africa: Atlas of our changing environment\ AMCEN; UNEP).
