This advisory note, based in part on the CAO’s experience in Peru to resolve issues surrounding the Yanacocha gold mine, provides hands-on guidance for implementing successful participatory water monitoring programmes. It gives examples of practical models to achieve participation in different environmental, financial and governance contexts. The guide opens in chapter 1 with a discussion of the need for participatory
monitoring. Chapters 2-5 describe the four components of an effective participatory monitoring programme:

* initiating the monitoring program;
* creating meaningful participation, effective governance, and transparent financing;
* creating credible information;
* evaluating the process and results.

Three appendices present: summaries of eight participatory monitoring programmes surveyed to provide background for this guide; sampling methods and procedures; and a list of additional resources.

Survey on monitoring networks and programmes in the Med countries

- Questionnaire to be filled-in organisations managing monitoring or programmes and to return it to the EMWIS Technical Unit before 21 August 2009. The regional analysis of the answers will be made by EMWIS TU partner Aquapole from the University of Liege (Belgium) and presented at a workshop at the autumn. The conclusions will be circulated to all the organisations who took part in the survey for comments.
