News Requesting Water from Neighboring Countries

The Jordanian Minister of Water, Al Alem, declared that the Jordanian water reality for the coming four decades will be a good one seeing as they are working on establishing new water projects. These include such projects as the Red-Dead Canal that will provide 570 million cubic meter (MCM) annually as drinking water and 300 MCM for agricultural purposes, and the Desi project that will provide about 100 MCM annually, the Zara-Ma'een project which will begin work this summer and will provide 45 MCM while in the winter season an amount of 80 MCM will be saved in the Wehda Dam, as well as the continuous process of trying to find new water resources. The minister also mentioned that Jordan gets about 55 MCM annually from the Lake of Tiberias, while the Jordan River is suffering from pollution due to the salt water and sewage discharged by Israel and Jordan to the river. The Ministry supports the role of the NGOs working on rehabilitating the river.
