Preparation of Environmental Master Plan for the Nahar-Al-Kabir River in Lebanon and Syria
- The Nahr-Al-Kabir River traces the northern border of Lebanon delimiting Syria, and flows into the Mediterranean Sea. After decades of neglect, the Al-Kabir River has become highly contaminated and is rapidly becoming a hazardous threat to local villagers, as well as to riverine and coastal ecosystems. Moreover, the river constitutes a potential violation to the “ Barcelona Convention Protocol for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea against Pollution from Land –Based Sources”, and namely to provisions relating to pollution discharges from land-based sources indirectly through rivers, canals or other watercourses.

Short-to-Medium Term Action Plan for the Nahr-Al-Kabir River that would help
the authorities in Lebanon and Syria secure a better quality of life and a
